Learning notes
Explanation
ปีน centers on physically climbing a tree, wall, ladder, or similar object with the hands and feet. Direction words make the movement more specific: ปีนขึ้น means “climb up,” ปีนลง “climb down,” and ปีนข้าม “climb over.” The object normally follows the verb directly, as in ปีนต้นไม้, “climb a tree.”
Usage
Commonly used for climbing trees, scaling walls, crossing fences, going up or down ladders and roofs, rock climbing, and other situations that require support from the hands and feet.
Caution
For ordinarily walking up stairs, ขึ้นบันได is more natural than ปีนบันได. ปีน is also not normally used for abstract increases in prices, rankings, or numerical values.
