Explanation
ครึ่งหนึ่ง combines ครึ่ง (“half”) and หนึ่ง (“one”) and refers to one of two equal parts of a whole. It can describe half of an object, amount, period of time, or group. Common patterns include a noun followed by ครึ่งหนึ่ง, as in นักเรียนครึ่งหนึ่ง (“half of the students”), and ครึ่งหนึ่งของ followed by a noun, as in ครึ่งหนึ่งของเงิน (“half of the money”). When the whole is already clear, ครึ่งหนึ่ง can stand alone for “half of it.” The pattern ครึ่งหนึ่ง…อีกครึ่งหนึ่ง… is commonly used to contrast “one half…” with “the other half….”
Usage
It is widely used when discussing half of some food, money, time, work, or a group of people. It is natural in everyday conversation as well as in explanations and statistical descriptions.
Caution
For “and a half” added to a unit, use ครึ่ง rather than ครึ่งหนึ่ง: “one and a half hours” is หนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่ง. To explicitly say “approximately half,” use ประมาณครึ่งหนึ่ง.
