Explanation

เข่า is used in everyday Thai for both the visible knee and the knee as a joint. ข้อเข่า makes the joint itself explicit. The sides are commonly distinguished with เข่าข้างซ้าย “left knee,” เข่าข้างขวา “right knee,” and เข่าทั้งสองข้าง “both knees.” When the owner is obvious, Thai normally omits a possessive, as in เจ็บเข่า “have knee pain.”

Usage

It is common when discussing knee pain or injuries, describing symptoms at a clinic, and giving instructions during exercise or stretching. It also appears when referring to the knee area of clothing and in คุกเข่า, “to kneel down.”

Caution

เข่า “knee” is a different word from เข้า “to enter” and ข้าว “rice; food.” When the knee joint itself needs to be identified precisely, ข้อเข่า is clearer.
