Explanation

Both meanings are neutral and common in everyday Thai. Flower garlands are made from strung flowers such as jasmine and may have decorative strands hanging from the loop. They are not always worn around the neck: smaller garlands can be presented by hand, offered to a Buddha image, or hung inside a car. Their use extends beyond religious settings. The classifier for a garland is พวง: พวงมาลัยหนึ่งพวง means “one flower garland.” A useful combination is ร้อยพวงมาลัย, meaning “to thread flowers into a garland.” For a steering wheel, the classifier is อัน. Common combinations include จับพวงมาลัย, “hold the steering wheel,” and หมุนพวงมาลัย, “turn the steering wheel.” พวงมาลัยหนัก describes steering that requires effort to turn. รถพวงมาลัยขวา means “a right-hand-drive car,” and รถพวงมาลัยซ้าย means “a left-hand-drive car.”

Usage

The garland sense is common when buying flowers near temples, preparing offerings, celebrating Mother's Day, honoring elders, or welcoming guests. The steering-wheel sense appears in driving lessons and discussions of vehicle features, handling, and repairs.

Caution

For a funeral wreath, use พวงหรีด; for a bouquet, use ช่อดอกไม้. พวงมาลัย usually refers to flowers strung together into a garland. Bicycle and motorcycle handlebars are normally called แฮนด์. A garland hanging inside a car is also called พวงมาลัย, so a conversation about cars can involve either meaning. Use the surrounding words to identify which one is intended.
