Learning notes
Explanation
The word can describe both a person's character and the bold manner in which someone confronts danger or difficulty. In อย่างอาจหาญ, it functions adverbially as “courageously.” A pattern such as ไม่อาจหาญ followed by a verb means that someone is not bold enough, or would not dare, to do something. อาจหาญ should be learned as a complete word rather than interpreting อาจ separately as “may” or “might.”
Usage
It is often used admiringly of soldiers, heroes, rescuers, or people who stand up to injustice or powerful opposition. It is more at home in narratives, speeches, and formal descriptions than in light everyday conversation.
Caution
For an ordinary, neutral way to say “brave,” กล้าหาญ is more common. อาจหาญ is normally complimentary; use a word such as บ้าบิ่น when criticizing someone as reckless.
