หรอก does not make a sentence negative by itself. It normally follows content containing a negative such as ไม่ “not,” ไม่ได้ “not; it is not the case that,” ไม่มี “there is no,” or ไม่ต้อง “do not need to.” The common pattern is ไม่…หรอก. It often implies, “You may think otherwise, but that is not the case.” In reassuring expressions such as ไม่เป็นไรหรอก or ไม่ยากหรอก, it gently dismisses the listener’s concern. Adding นะ, as in หรอกนะ, makes the appeal to the listener more explicit and can help correct a misunderstanding or add gentle insistence.
Usage
It is common in everyday conversation when correcting an assumption, denying a suspicion, reassuring someone, or making a confident negative prediction. It also appears in resigned or rhetorical remarks such as “They won't listen anyway” or “How would anyone know?”
Caution
Do not confuse หรอก with เหรอ or หรือ, which can mark a question. หรอก does not negate a sentence on its own; it is normally used with a negative or contextually contradictory statement. With strong stress, it may sound defensive or dismissive rather than reassuring.
