น่าเกลียด consists of น่า, which forms the idea of being likely or worthy to cause a reaction, and เกลียด, “to hate or dislike.” Its underlying image is therefore something that invites dislike. Its range is broader than physical ugliness. It can describe a person’s appearance, an unpleasant-looking object, an offensive facial expression, or behavior that is socially improper or morally objectionable. Thai adjectives can function directly as predicates, so ชุดนี้น่าเกลียด means “This outfit is ugly.” Adding มาก, as in น่าเกลียดมาก, makes the negative judgment even stronger.
