Explanation
ฝาชี is placed over prepared dishes left on a table or kitchen counter. Its main purpose is to keep flies, other insects, and dust away rather than to seal food for storage. Traditional versions are cone- or dome-shaped and woven from bamboo, while modern ones may be made from plastic, wire mesh, or screening. It commonly appears with ครอบ, “to place something over or cover,” as in เอาฝาชีครอบอาหารไว้, “put the food cover over the food.” The usual classifier for counting these covers is ใบ.
Usage
It is commonly used in homes, food stalls, and markets when prepared dishes, sweets, or fruit are left out temporarily and need protection from insects and dust.
Caution
For a fitted lid belonging to a pot or container, use ฝา or a more specific term such as ฝาหม้อ, “pot lid.” A ฝาชี covers food from above and is not intended to provide an airtight seal or long-term storage.
