Explanation

The central idea is a conditional promise: “If you grant my wish, I will do what I have promised.” The promised act might be bringing offerings or arranging a dance performance in honor of the deity. This commitment is implied even when the sentence does not specify it. Common patterns include บนบานขอให้… to state the desired outcome and บนบานว่าถ้า…จะ… to say “if this happens, I will…” Fulfilling the promise after the wish comes true is called แก้บน. Learn the pair together: บนบาน is making the vow, and แก้บน is fulfilling it. The longer expression บนบานศาลกล่าว is also used.

Usage

Use it when discussing vows made at temples or shrines for exam success, a job, business prosperity, or a family member’s recovery. It also appears in everyday accounts of what someone wished for and promised. Its use extends to various deities and spirits and is not limited to Buddhism.

Caution

Do not use it for ordinary requests to people or for vows in general, such as wedding vows or promises to a friend. The shorter form บน is spelled the same as the preposition meaning “on,” but here it is a verb with a separate meaning.
