Learning notes
Explanation
ถุงยางอนามัย is a standard, neutral term rather than crude slang. It is formed from ถุง (“bag”), ยาง (“rubber”), and อนามัย (“health” or “hygiene”), but learners should treat the whole expression as the ordinary word for “condom.” The name does not imply that every condom is made from natural rubber. Common combinations include ใช้ถุงยางอนามัย (“use a condom”) and สวมถุงยางอนามัย (“put on/wear a condom”). Individual condoms may be counted with อัน or ชิ้น; ซอง, กล่อง, and แพ็ก are used when counting individual wrappers, boxes, or packs.
Usage
It is used when buying condoms at a pharmacy or convenience store, discussing contraception with a partner, receiving advice about STI prevention, and in sex education or public-health information. The subject may be private, but the word itself is neutral and appropriate.
Caution
By itself, the term usually refers to an external condom worn on the penis. To specify an internal or female condom, Thai may use ถุงยางอนามัยสำหรับผู้หญิง. Condoms reduce the risk of pregnancy and STIs but should not be described as providing absolute protection.
