Explanation
Borrowed from English “suit,” this is the standard modern Thai word for this type of clothing. It can refer to both men's and women's suits. ชุดสูท clearly means a complete matching suit, while เสื้อสูท refers specifically to the jacket. สูท by itself commonly refers to the suit as a whole. ตัว may be used when counting it as an item of clothing. To emphasize a complete set, use ชุด, as in ชุดสูทหนึ่งชุด (“one suit”). Older references may list an unrelated cooking-related use of สูท, but it is not useful in ordinary modern Thai.
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing business or formal clothing for offices, job interviews, weddings, meetings, and ceremonies. You will also hear it when asking about dress codes or shopping for formalwear.
Caution
Use เสื้อสูท for the jacket alone and ชุดสูท when you want to make it clear that you mean the complete set. สูท does not mean “suitcase”; a suitcase or travel bag is กระเป๋าเดินทาง.
