โรงแรม is the standard, neutral Thai word for “hotel.” It covers a broad range of commercial hotels and does not imply that the establishment is luxurious. The word can be understood as โรง, referring to a building or establishment, plus แรม, associated with staying away from home overnight. In modern usage, however, it is best learned as a single word. Common combinations include จองโรงแรม (“book a hotel”) and พักที่โรงแรม (“stay at a hotel”). Hotels can be counted with แห่ง or โรง, as in โรงแรมสองแห่ง or โรงแรมสองโรง (“two hotels”).
Usage
It is commonly used when planning trips, booking accommodation, checking in, asking for directions, or discussing a hotel’s location, price, rooms, and facilities. It also appears frequently on travel websites, maps, and tourist information.
Caution
โรงแรม names the establishment; it does not mean “to stay.” Use พักที่โรงแรม for “stay at a hotel.” A รีสอร์ต is a resort designed primarily for leisure, while a โฮสเทล is typically inexpensive accommodation that may offer shared rooms. โรงแรม by itself does not imply a love hotel.
