Learning notes
Explanation
This is a common, neutral clothing term. Words describing length or style normally follow it, as in กระโปรงสั้น “short skirt,” กระโปรงยาว “long skirt,” and กระโปรงจีบ “pleated skirt.” It commonly appears with ใส่, the general verb for wearing clothing: ใส่กระโปรง means “wear a skirt.” นุ่งกระโปรง is also possible; นุ่ง specifically focuses on putting on or wearing something around the lower body. The usual classifier is ตัว. For example, กระโปรงสองตัว means “two skirts,” and กระโปรงตัวนี้ means “this skirt.”
Usage
It is widely used when discussing outfits, shopping for clothes, describing a skirt’s color, length, or style, and talking about school or workplace uniforms.
Caution
On its own, กระโปรง normally means “skirt.” Use ชุดกระโปรง for a one-piece dress. For parts of a car, use an expression containing ฝา, such as ฝากระโปรงหน้า for the hood or bonnet and ฝากระโปรงหลัง for the trunk or boot lid.
