Learning notes

Explanation

ลูกชาย is formed from ลูก (“child”) and ชาย (“male”) and means “son.” It does not imply that the son is young; it can also refer to an adult. Possession can be expressed with ของ, as in ลูกชายของฉัน (“my son”). In conversation, ของ is often omitted, producing forms such as ลูกชายฉัน or ลูกชายคุณ. The classifier คน is used when counting sons: ลูกชายสองคน means “two sons.” ลูกชายคนโต refers to the oldest son, while ลูกชายคนเล็ก refers to the youngest son.

Usage

It is commonly used when describing one’s family, introducing a son, or discussing his age, education, work, or current situation. It is a standard term suitable for both everyday conversation and more formal contexts.

Caution

ลูกชาย describes a family relationship and means “son,” not simply any boy. Use เด็กผู้ชาย for “boy” when parentage is irrelevant. The corresponding word for “daughter” is ลูกสาว.
