ตลาดน้ำ is a compound of ตลาด, “market,” and น้ำ, “water.” Traditionally, it refers to a market where vendors carry and sell goods from boats on a waterway. In modern usage, it may cover an entire tourist market, including canal-side shops, restaurants, and boat rides—not just vendors actually sitting in boats. The classifier แห่ง can be used when counting these markets as places, as in ตลาดน้ำหนึ่งแห่ง, “one floating market.” A place name often follows the word, as in ตลาดน้ำอัมพวา, “Amphawa Floating Market.”
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing travel in Thailand, weekend outings, local food, souvenirs, and traditional waterside life. It also appears in questions about a market’s location, opening days, food, shopping boats, or boat tours.
Caution
