Explanation
The expression is formed from ไร้, “to lack or be without,” and ยางอาย, “a sense of shame or modest restraint.” It can describe a person, as in คนไร้ยางอาย (“a shameless person”), or an action, as in การกระทำที่ไร้ยางอาย (“a shameless act”). In the pattern อย่างไร้ยางอาย, it functions adverbially and means “shamelessly” or “brazenly.” It does not simply mean that someone is not shy or embarrassed. It conveys strong moral disapproval of behavior that the speaker believes should cause shame.
Usage
Used to condemn behavior such as lying, fraud, corruption, exploitation, or evading responsibility when the person is thought to show no appropriate shame. It occurs in arguments as well as news reports, political criticism, and social-media commentary.
Caution
This is a strongly judgmental expression. Calling someone ไร้ยางอาย or คนไร้ยางอาย directly can be a serious personal insult. It is not specifically a word for “obscene” or “sexually indecent.”
