Learning notes

Explanation

ด้าย refers to thread made from fibers such as cotton and used mainly for sewing or weaving. It commonly appears with เข็ม (“needle”), as in ด้ายกับเข็ม (“thread and needle”). Use the classifier เส้น when counting individual lengths or strands: ด้ายหนึ่งเส้น means “one strand of thread.” Use หลอด when counting spools, as in ด้ายสองหลอด (“two spools of thread”). To specify a color, place สี and the color name after ด้าย, as in ด้ายสีแดง (“red thread”).

Usage

It is commonly used when talking about sewing, mending clothes, embroidery, crafts, and weaving. You will also use it when buying thread and specifying its color or number of spools.

Caution

ด้าย does not cover everything that may be called “string” or “yarn” in English. Use เชือก for thicker string, rope, or cord; ไหมพรม for knitting yarn; and ไหมขัดฟัน for dental floss. Also, do not confuse ด้าย with ได้, which means “to get” or “can.”
