Explanation

สูสี is used when two or more sides are close in ability, performance, votes, quality, or another comparable measure, leaving neither with an obvious advantage. Common patterns include “A กับ B สูสีกัน” (A and B are evenly matched), “ฝีมือสูสีกัน” (be closely matched in skill), and “แข่งกันอย่างสูสี” (compete in a very close contest). กัน makes the reciprocal comparison between the sides explicit. Dictionaries may classify สูสี as either a verb or an adjective. In ordinary Thai it commonly functions as a predicate, as in “ฝีมือสูสีกัน,” while “อย่างสูสี” describes the manner in which a competition proceeds.

Usage

Commonly used for closely contested sports and evenly matched players or teams. It can also describe narrow differences in election results, test scores, product performance, or quality. It is natural in both everyday conversation and news reporting.

Caution

Do not use สูสี merely to say that things look alike or share similar characteristics. It normally compares multiple sides in terms of ability, performance, or another measure of relative standing. The sides do not have to be exactly equal; a small difference is allowed.
