Learning notes

Explanation

หมื่น is the standard Thai numeral for 10,000. The number 10,000 may be expressed as either หมื่น or หนึ่งหมื่น. For higher multiples, place another numeral before it: สองหมื่น means 20,000, and สามหมื่น means 30,000. More precise numbers are built from larger to smaller units. For example, สองหมื่นห้าพัน means 25,000. หมื่น is a numeral, not a classifier. A noun or classifier follows when needed, as in สองหมื่นคน “20,000 people” and สองหมื่นบาท “20,000 baht.” หมื่น also occurs as an old historical rank or title, but that use is not part of ordinary modern Thai and is therefore not treated as a separate learner-level sense here.

Usage

It is commonly used for prices, salaries, budgets, populations, view counts, and other quantities measured in tens of thousands.

Caution

Do not confuse พัน (1,000), หมื่น (10,000), and แสน (100,000). Also, 20,000 is normally สองหมื่น, not ยี่หมื่น.
