Explanation
This expression combines ชัก, “to pull or move something by means of a mechanism,” with ธง, “flag.” Its basic image is pulling a halyard to raise a flag up a pole. A common combination is ชักธงชาติ, “to raise the national flag.” ชักธงขาว, literally “to raise a white flag,” is also commonly used figuratively to mean “to surrender” or “to give up.”
Usage
It is commonly used for formal flag-raising at schools, government offices, military facilities, and ceremonies. With a white flag, it can also figuratively describe giving up in a competition or difficult situation.
Caution
It does not mean “wave a flag.” Use โบกธง when someone waves a flag by hand. To say that a flag is lowered, use ลดธง or explicitly say ชักธงลง.
