Explanation
แต่งหน้า combines แต่ง, “to arrange or decorate,” with หน้า, “face.” It is a neutral, everyday expression covering everything from light personal makeup to elaborate stage makeup. When someone applies their own makeup, the verb normally appears without an object, as in ฉันแต่งหน้า. To say that makeup is applied to another person, use แต่งหน้าให้ followed by the person. Words describing the finished look can follow the verb: แต่งหน้าจัด means to wear heavy makeup, แต่งหน้าอ่อนๆ means to apply light makeup, and แต่งหน้าเป็นธรรมชาติ means to create a natural makeup look.
Usage
Common in conversations about getting ready, daily makeup routines, and different makeup styles. It is also used in beauty services, weddings, photo shoots, theater, television, and film production.
Caution
Do not confuse it with แต่งตัว, which means to get dressed or attend to one's overall appearance. แต่งหน้า is specifically about facial makeup. Also, แต่งหน้าจัด means to wear heavy makeup and may sound critical depending on the context.
