Learning notes
Explanation
The word combines ของ, “thing,” with เล่น, “play.” It is a neutral, everyday noun used both in conversation and in product descriptions. The usual classifier is ชิ้น: ของเล่นสามชิ้น means “three toys.” For a set, use ชุด: ของเล่นหนึ่งชุด means “one set of toys.” Adults may jokingly call a hobby gadget their “toy.” The word can also describe someone being treated as a plaything, as in ฉันไม่ใช่ของเล่นของเธอ, “I'm not your toy.”
Usage
Use it when talking about buying toys, children playing, or tidying up at home or daycare. You will also see it in ร้านขายของเล่น, “toy shop,” and แผนกของเล่น, “toy department.”
Caution
ของเล่น is a noun. The verb “play” is เล่น, so เล่นของเล่น is the normal expression for “play with toys.” Amusement park rides and playground equipment are generally called เครื่องเล่น.
