สาย means a line, cord, or strand, while ใย refers to a fine fiber or thread. Together they create the image of a slender thread connecting separate people. In ordinary use, สายใย usually refers to an invisible bond formed by affection, family ties, or trust. It is especially common in expressions such as สายใยครอบครัว, “family bonds.” The thread metaphor also appears in combinations such as สร้างสายใย “build a bond,” เชื่อมสายใย “strengthen or establish a bond,” and สายใยขาด “a bond is broken.”
Usage
It is used when talking about warm connections among family members, parents and children, partners, friends, or members of a community. Although readily understood in conversation, it is especially common in emotionally engaging writing, public campaigns, advertising, dramas, and songs. It also occurs in compounds such as สายใยอาหาร, “food web.”
Caution
Do not use สายใย for every kind of “relationship.” Objective or institutional relationships—such as business, diplomatic, or causal relationships—are normally expressed with words such as ความสัมพันธ์ or ความเกี่ยวข้อง. สายใย is most appropriate when an affectionate or personal bond is intended.
