ขาด means “be short of,” and ทุน means “capital” or “funds.” Together, they describe a financial loss. The word covers both losing invested money and business losses after expenses such as rent and wages. It is common in everyday conversation and financial reporting. It can directly follow the subject: ปีนี้บริษัทขาดทุน means “The company is losing money this year.” A loss amount can follow the verb: ขาดทุนไปสองพันบาท means “I lost 2,000 baht.” People also sometimes use it jokingly about not getting their money’s worth, such as eating very little at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Usage
Use it when discussing business results, selling below cost, or losing money on investments. Common expressions include ขายขาดทุน, “sell at a loss,” and ขาดทุนเท่าไหร่, “How much did you lose?”
Caution
Making no profit does not necessarily mean ขาดทุน. If revenue equals costs, use เท่าทุน, “break even.” It also does not simply mean being short of cash. Use เงินทุนไม่พอ for having insufficient funds.
