Explanation

In grammar, วลี is a group of words functioning as a unit within a sentence. For example, เด็กตัวเล็ก, “the small child,” is a นามวลี, or noun phrase. It serves as the subject in เด็กตัวเล็กกำลังนอน, “The small child is sleeping.” In broader use, the focus is on the wording of an expression. ฉันชอบวลีนี้ means “I like this phrase.” The combination วลีเด็ด is commonly used for a catchphrase or a memorable line from a movie or social media. To count phrases, use วลี + number + วลี. For example, เขียนวลีสามวลี means “Write three phrases.”

Usage

Used in language lessons and grammar explanations to discuss phrases and their structure. It also appears when discussing wording or quoting memorable expressions from movies, advertising, or social media.

Caution

In grammar, distinguish วลี, “phrase,” from ประโยค, “sentence.” In everyday discussion of memorable wording, however, วลี can also refer to an expression that forms a complete sentence.
