Explanation

The central idea of นาม is something that identifies or designates by name. It comes from Pali and Sanskrit and sounds more formal than the everyday word ชื่อ. In modern Thai, it is especially common in compounds such as นามสกุล (“surname”), นามปากกา (“pen name”), and คำนาม (“noun”). The pattern ในนามของ… is also important, meaning “in the name of” or “on behalf of.” In Buddhist and philosophical writing, นาม can refer to nonmaterial phenomena such as thought, feeling, and perception, in contrast with รูป. This is a specialized use and is not included as a core learner sense here.

Usage

It commonly appears on forms, in official announcements, ceremonial or business speech, and other formal settings. Learners will also encounter it frequently in established compounds such as นามสกุล and in grammar terms such as คำนาม.

Caution

In ordinary conversation, ask คุณชื่ออะไร for “What is your name?” คุณนามอะไร is not normally used. Also, although นามธรรม means “abstraction” or “abstract,” this does not mean that bare นาม can always be translated as “abstract.”
