Explanation

The term consists of โรค, meaning “disease,” and มะเร็ง, meaning “cancer.” It is a standard expression used in everyday conversation as well as in hospitals, news reports, and public health information. To say that someone has cancer, Thai commonly uses เป็นโรคมะเร็ง or the shorter เป็นมะเร็ง. It also appears in phrases such as ป้องกันโรคมะเร็ง “prevent cancer,” ตรวจหาโรคมะเร็ง “screen or test for cancer,” and รักษาโรคมะเร็ง “treat cancer.” A body part can follow the term to name a type of cancer, as in โรคมะเร็งปอด “lung cancer.”

Usage

This term is commonly used in medical consultations, test results, health screenings, discussions of cancer prevention and treatment, news reports, and public health guidance. It is also used when discussing the illness of a family member or acquaintance.

Caution

Do not confuse โรคมะเร็ง with เนื้องอก “tumor,” since a tumor may be benign. Cancer is also a serious and sensitive diagnosis, so avoid stating that someone has it without confirmation and be mindful of the person’s privacy and feelings.
