Learning notes

Explanation

นิสิต is a noun for a student enrolled at a university or another higher-education institution. Thai universities do not all use the same official term for their students. Institutions such as Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, and Srinakharinwirot University traditionally use นิสิต. Although the word often brings undergraduates to mind, it does not always specify the level of study. นิสิตปริญญาตรี explicitly means “undergraduate,” while นิสิตบัณฑิตศึกษา refers to a graduate student. People denoted by this word are counted with คน.

Usage

It commonly appears in university announcements, regulations, orientation materials, student organizations, and other campus contexts. At institutions that officially use this designation, it is also natural in everyday conversation when identifying someone as a student of that university.

Caution

นักศึกษา is the broadly applicable term for a university student. Do not automatically call every university student นิสิต; it is more natural to follow the terminology used by the person’s institution. Secondary-school students are normally called นักเรียน.
