Explanation
The word is formed from นัก, which marks a person associated with an activity, and ศึกษา, “to study.” In normal modern usage, however, it does not mean just any learner; it usually refers to a student enrolled in higher education. It is a standard term suitable for both everyday conversation and official university communication. A year of study can follow the noun, as in นักศึกษาปีหนึ่ง, “a first-year university student.” The usual classifier for counting students is คน: นักศึกษาสามคน means “three students.”
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing university enrollment, classes, exams, assignments, scholarships, student ID cards, and dormitories. It also appears frequently in university notices, rules, and administrative documents.
Caution
English “student” can refer to someone at almost any educational level, but Thai commonly distinguishes by level. Use นักเรียน for elementary- through high-school students and นักศึกษา for students in higher education.
