Explanation
บัตร broadly refers to a card, ticket, pass, or ballot issued to make information, status, rights, or a choice visible. It can stand alone, but it very often occurs with a following word that states its purpose, as in บัตรประชาชน (ID card), บัตรเครดิต (credit card), and บัตรโดยสาร (travel ticket). Common verb combinations include ทำบัตร (get or arrange for a card to be made), ออกบัตร (issue a card or ticket), แสดงบัตร (show a card or ticket), ใช้บัตร (use a card), and รูดบัตร (swipe or run a payment card). The usual classifier for cards and tickets is ใบ, so “two cards” is บัตรสองใบ. Although the word is historically borrowed from Pali, it is an ordinary part of modern Thai.
Usage
It is common when showing identification at government offices, banks, or hotels; using membership or patient cards; paying by card; buying or presenting transportation and admission tickets; and discussing elections. It also appears frequently in official names and public signs.
Caution
บัตร does not cover every object called a “card” in English. Playing cards are normally ไพ่, while a business card is specifically นามบัตร. Also, ธนบัตร means “banknote,” but บัตร by itself does not normally mean money or a banknote.
