The core idea of จ่าย is sending something out from your side. The most important everyday use is จ่ายเงิน, “to pay money,” as in จ่ายค่าอาหาร “pay for food,” จ่ายค่าเช่า “pay rent,” and จ่ายภาษี “pay taxes.” It is also used when a company pays salaries or bonuses, such as จ่ายเงินเดือน and จ่ายโบนัส. From that idea, it extends to giving out medicine, assigning work, distributing tickets, and supplying power or water, as in จ่ายไฟ.
Usage
You will hear จ่าย in shopping, restaurants, bills, rent, utilities, taxes, salaries, pharmacies, accounting, and equipment or facility contexts. For daily use, phrases like จ่ายด้วยบัตรได้ไหม “Can I pay by card?”, ใครจะจ่าย “Who’s paying?”, and จ่ายแล้ว “I already paid” are especially useful.
Caution
จ่ายตลาด is a fixed expression meaning “to shop at the market.” For the general verb “buy,” use ซื้อ. Also, จ่ายเอง means “pay by oneself”; for “treat someone” or “pay for someone,” เลี้ยง is usually more natural.
