Explanation
The core image of สิ้น is reaching the endpoint with nothing left. For everyday “run out” or “be gone,” Thai usually uses หมด, as in เงินหมดแล้ว or น้ำหมดแล้ว. สิ้น tends to sound more formal, serious, or written, but it is very useful in common compounds such as สิ้นเดือน, สิ้นปี, สิ้นสุด, สิ้นหวัง, and หมดสิ้น.
Usage
You will often see it in dates and deadlines, formal reports about something ending, and serious contexts involving hope, life, or resources being exhausted. In conversation, it is most useful to learn it through fixed expressions like “end of the month,” “end of the year,” “conclude,” and “lose hope.”
Caution
Using สิ้น for ordinary situations like a dead battery or food running out can sound overly dramatic; หมด is usually natural there. Also, สิ้นใจ refers to death and should not be used casually.
