Learning notes

Explanation

ทั้งหมด is formed from ทั้ง and หมด and conveys the idea of including an entire range with nothing left out. Depending on the context, it can refer to all the people, all of an object or group, or the total amount. When it modifies a noun, it normally follows that noun, as in นักเรียนทั้งหมด (“all the students”). When the thing being discussed is already clear, it can stand alone, as in เอาทั้งหมด (“I’ll take all of them”). It also introduces a total before a number or amount, as in มีทั้งหมดสิบคน (“There are ten people in total”). It is neutral, very common, and suitable for both everyday speech and writing.

Usage

It is commonly used when including every person or item, saying that an entire task has been completed, or choosing all available items while shopping. It is also frequent when stating or asking about totals such as the number of people, quantity of goods, or total price.

Caution

When modifying a noun, ทั้งหมด normally follows it. For example, “all the books” is หนังสือทั้งหมด, not ทั้งหมดหนังสือ. A phrase such as หนังสือทั้งหมด may refer either to all the books in a set or, in some contexts, to the entirety of one book. Add a quantity or more context when the intended scope could be unclear.

1 all synonyms

  • ทั้งสิ้น also means “all” or “in its entirety,” but often sounds more formal or written. ทั้งหมด is neutral and common in both conversation and writing.

  • ทุก comes before a noun and includes each member individually, as in ทุกคน (“everyone”). ทั้งหมด normally follows the noun and presents the group or object as a complete whole.
