Explanation

The word combines ทำ “to do or make” with บุญ “merit,” giving the core idea of “making merit.” Common forms of merit-making include offering food to monks, donating to a temple, observing Buddhist precepts, and helping people in need. The activity does not always have to take place at a temple, but it is understood in relation to Buddhist merit. The word is also used for ceremonies held with monks on occasions such as birthdays, moving into a new home, opening a business, funerals, and death anniversaries. ทำบุญให้ followed by a person means to make merit for that person, often transferring merit to someone who has died.

Usage

This word is common when talking about visiting a temple to give offerings, putting food in monks’ alms bowls, or doing good deeds on birthdays, New Year, and other meaningful occasions. It is also used for Buddhist ceremonies connected with a new home, funerals, and death anniversaries.

Caution

It does not simply mean “go to a temple.” Use ไปวัด for going to a temple for any purpose and ไหว้พระ when specifically referring to paying respect to a Buddha image. For an ordinary donation with no merit-making context, บริจาค is usually more appropriate.
