Explanation

The usual pattern is “the word or phrase being intensified + เหลือเกิน.” It can intensify qualities and states, as in สวยเหลือเกิน, as well as feelings or actions, as in คิดถึงเธอเหลือเกิน. Its tone depends on the context. With a positive description, it can express admiration or delight; with an unpleasant state, it can convey frustration, distress, or excess. It therefore does not always mean the negative “too”—often “extremely” or “so” is more appropriate. Compared with มาก, it carries more of the speaker’s personal emotion. It is common in heartfelt speech, songs, and storytelling and may sound somewhat dramatic in an otherwise neutral statement.

Usage

It is used when reacting strongly to beauty, affection, longing, heat, fatigue, difficulty, or another striking condition. It works for both admiration and complaint; the surrounding words and situation determine whether the reaction is positive or negative.

Caution

It normally follows the word or phrase it intensifies. Do not automatically translate it as “too.” Use เกินไป when you specifically mean that something exceeds a suitable limit; for example, สวยเหลือเกิน expresses strong admiration, whereas สวยเกินไป may suggest that being so beautiful causes a problem or seems inappropriate.
