Explanation
The core image is putting something into an opening or passage so that nothing can pass through it. The usual pattern is อุด followed by the thing being blocked: อุดรู means “plug a hole,” อุดหู means “cover or plug one’s ears,” and อุดท่อ means “block a pipe.” The material can be introduced with ด้วย, as in อุดรูด้วยปูน, “seal the hole with cement.” อุดฟัน is the everyday dental expression for filling a cavity. อุดหนุน is a fixed compound meaning “support” or “patronize a business.” อุด does not normally mean “support” when used by itself.
Usage
It is common in repairs and construction when plugging holes, sealing leaks, or blocking pipes. It is also used for covering the ears against loud noise and for filling cavities at the dentist.
Caution
Use ปิด for simply closing a door, window, or lid. Use อุด when an opening or passage is physically plugged or obstructed. For a stuffy nose caused by illness, จมูกตัน is the natural expression; จมูกอุด is not normally used.
