Learning notes

Explanation

จำพวก groups people, animals, objects, or other things together according to shared characteristics. Common patterns include a noun followed by จำพวกนี้ or จำพวกนั้น (“this/that kind of ...”) and จัดอยู่ในจำพวก (“belong to the category of ...”). The combination จัดจำพวก means “to classify.” It can also follow a number, as in สองจำพวก, to count categories or types.

Usage

It is commonly used when describing classes of animals or plants, sorting objects or information, and stating which group something belongs to. In conversation, it also appears in expressions such as ของจำพวกนี้ (“things of this kind”) and คนจำพวกนั้น (“those kinds of people”).

Caution

When used about people, คนจำพวกนี้ or คนจำพวกนั้น can sound judgmental or dismissive, like “these/those sorts of people.” For a neutral reference to a particular group, คนกลุ่มนี้ (“this group of people”) is often more appropriate.
