Learning notes
Explanation
หมั้น refers to a formal promise to marry, not simply wanting or planning to marry someday. Use หมั้นกับ before the person someone is engaged to. When referring to the couple together, หมั้นกัน is common; หมั้นกันแล้ว means that they are already engaged. The event or concept of engagement is commonly expressed as การหมั้น. In Thailand, an engagement may include a family ceremony called งานหมั้น or พิธีหมั้น.
Usage
It is commonly used when announcing an engagement or discussing an engagement ceremony, an engaged couple, an engagement ring, or preparations for marriage. It is natural in both everyday conversation and more formal discussions.
Caution
แต่งงาน means “to marry,” while หมั้น refers to the earlier step of becoming engaged. Someone described as หมั้นแล้ว is not necessarily married yet. Also, do not confuse หมั้น with มั่น, which means “firm,” “certain,” or “stable.”
