Learning notes
Explanation
In modern standard Thai, มัก is mainly used as an adverb. The pattern มักจะ + verb/state is very common. In this pattern, จะ does not necessarily mark the future; it helps form the idea that something tends to happen. The word is usable in both speech and writing, but it can sound a little more explanatory or objective than very casual alternatives such as บ่อย ๆ or some uses of ชอบ. Some dictionaries list a verb meaning “to like,” but learners should normally use ชอบ for that meaning in standard Thai. The “like” sense is especially associated with regional usage, such as Isaan, so it is not treated as a core learner meaning here.
Usage
Use มัก when describing habits, personality patterns, recurring behavior, natural phenomena, or social tendencies. It is useful when you want to say that something often or typically happens, but not always.
Caution
มัก does not mean “always.” For “always,” words like เสมอ or ตลอด may be better; for simple high frequency, บ่อย ๆ may fit better. To say “hardly ever,” use ไม่ค่อย + verb rather than ไม่มัก in normal everyday Thai.

1 often synonyms
-
ชอบ primarily means “to like,” and in casual speech it can also imply doing something often. มัก does not express liking; it describes an observed habit or tendency.
-
บ่อย ๆ emphasizes high frequency in everyday speech. มัก is more about a recurring tendency or general pattern, not just the number of times something happens.
