Explanation
The central image of ตก is downward movement from a higher, stable, or acceptable position. This explains its use not only for physical falls but also for decreasing prices, failing an exam, and entering a difficult situation. It is usually intransitive in its basic physical sense: แก้วตก means “the glass falls.” To say that someone accidentally drops an object, Thai commonly uses ทำ + object + ตก, as in ทำแก้วตก, “drop a glass.” Its meaning is often determined by the words around it. Common combinations such as ฝนตก “rain,” สอบตก “fail an exam,” ตกรถ “miss transportation,” and ตกงาน “be unemployed” are best learned as complete patterns. Some very common words, including ตกใจ “be startled” and ตกลง “agree; decide,” cannot be translated reliably by interpreting ตก on its own. Learn these as separate lexical units.
Usage
In everyday conversation, ตก is common when talking about dropped objects, rain, sunset, and changes in prices or temperature. It also appears frequently in education for failing tests, in travel for missing transportation, and in discussions of work for unemployment. News and more formal writing use it for abstract transitions such as falling into danger, becoming a victim, or coming under an enemy's control. In calculations and shared expenses, ตกคนละ… is a useful pattern meaning “come to … per person.”
Caution
Do not assume that ตก directly takes an object whenever English uses the transitive verb “drop.” For accidental dropping, the usual pattern is ทำ + object + ตก, as in ทำโทรศัพท์ตก, “drop a phone.” Also, ตก followed by a noun does not always mean that the noun falls. ตกปลา means “fish,” while ตกวิชา means “fail a subject.” Check and learn frequent combinations as whole expressions.
