Explanation
The expression combines หิมะ, “snow,” with ตก, “fall.” Although listed as a verb expression, it consists of a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a sentence. ฝนตก, “it rains,” follows the same pattern. Thai does not change the verb form for tense. Context determines whether หิมะตก means “it snows,” “it's snowing,” or “it snowed.” Place จะ for future events and ไม่ for negation between หิมะ and ตก: หิมะจะตก means “it will snow,” and หิมะไม่ตก means “it doesn't snow.”
Usage
Use it in weather conversations, forecasts, and discussions of trips to snowy places. It works both for pointing out snow outside and for asking about winter weather in countries such as Japan.
Caution
This describes snow falling, not snow simply remaining on the ground. For snow already on the ground, you can say มีหิมะบนพื้น, “there's snow on the ground.”
