The word is formed from ผู้, “a person who,” and โดยสาร, “to travel as a passenger,” giving the basic idea of “a person traveling aboard a vehicle.” It applies to passengers in buses, trains, planes, boats, taxis, and private cars. It is neutral in tone and works in both everyday conversation and official transportation announcements. A vehicle can follow the word, as in ผู้โดยสารรถไฟ, “train passenger,” or ผู้โดยสารเครื่องบิน, “airplane passenger.” Passengers are normally counted with คน: ผู้โดยสารสองคน means “two passengers.”
Usage
Common in station and airport announcements, onboard notices, transportation rules, ticketing conversations, taxi and ride-hailing contexts, and news about transportation. It is also used when counting passengers, giving them instructions, or arranging to pick them up.
Caution
The term normally excludes the driver, pilot, and crew because they operate or work aboard the vehicle. For “tourist,” use นักท่องเที่ยว instead.
