รสจัด

Explanation

The expression combines รส (“taste” or “flavor”) with จัด, which here means “strong” or “intense.” It does not simply mean salty. It describes a bold overall flavor in which heat, sourness, saltiness, or other tastes are especially noticeable. In Thai cuisine, it often refers to dishes with several assertive flavors working together. It can follow a noun, as in อาหารรสจัด (“strongly flavored food”), or occur after มี, as in อาหารมีรสจัด (“the food has a strong flavor”).

Usage

Commonly used when discussing food preferences, describing Thai dishes, or commenting on seasoning. At restaurants, รสไม่จัด is useful for requesting a milder, less intensely seasoned dish.

Caution

รสจัด does not always mean extremely hot. Use เผ็ดจัด or เผ็ดมาก when specifically referring to intense chili heat. Also, requesting รสไม่จัด does not necessarily mean no chili; if you want the dish non-spicy, say ไม่เผ็ด explicitly.
