Learning notes
Explanation
สวัสดี is Thailand’s standard greeting and can be used in the morning, afternoon, or evening. There is normally no need to choose a different basic greeting according to the time of day. For a polite greeting, male speakers generally say สวัสดีครับ, while female speakers generally say สวัสดีค่ะ. The choice of ครับ or ค่ะ normally depends on the speaker, not the person being addressed. สวัสดี can also serve as a farewell, although in present-day conversation it is much more commonly associated with saying hello. Its historical meaning is connected with well-being and prosperity, but learners can treat the modern greeting as a fixed expression.
Usage
It is widely used for introductions, customer service, meeting people at work or school, opening phone or online conversations, and addressing a group. สวัสดีครับ or สวัสดีค่ะ is a safe, polite choice when you are unsure of the relationship. It can also be used on parting, though แล้วเจอกัน (“see you”) is often more conversational among friends.
Caution
In situations requiring politeness, add ครับ or ค่ะ rather than using สวัสดี alone. Female speakers normally use ค่ะ in this greeting; do not confuse it with คะ, which is commonly used in questions. Also, while สวัสดี can mean “goodbye,” this use is less common than its use as “hello.”
