Learning notes
Explanation
The expression is formed from โรงเรียน “school,” มัธยม “secondary education,” and ต้น “early” or “lower level.” In Thailand, มัธยมต้น generally covers มัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1–3, abbreviated ม.1–ม.3. It is roughly comparable to junior high or middle school, though grade divisions differ across education systems. For the educational level itself, ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น is used. A student at this level is called นักเรียนมัธยมต้น.
Usage
Used when discussing a lower secondary school as an institution, such as its location, a student’s school, the next stage of schooling, or a teacher’s workplace. It also appears in explanations of Thailand’s education system.
Caution
This term refers to the school, not a lower secondary student; the student is นักเรียนมัธยมต้น. Also, โรงเรียนมัธยม may cover both lower and upper secondary education, so it is not always interchangeable with โรงเรียนมัธยมต้น.
