  1. 1 school、school building

This is the basic Thai word for a school where children or students receive an education. It can refer to the institution, the place students attend, or the school building.

Learning notes

Explanation

โรงเรียน is formed from โรง, referring to a building or facility, and เรียน, meaning “to study” or “to learn.” In modern Thai, however, it is best learned as a single word meaning “school.” It can refer to the building, the institution, or the school someone attends. A word describing the type of school can follow it, as in โรงเรียนประถมศึกษา (primary school) and โรงเรียนมัธยมศึกษา (secondary school). When counting schools as institutions, แห่ง is a common classifier: โรงเรียนสามแห่ง means “three schools.”

Usage

It is widely used when talking about attending school, being at school, school closures, school events, and choosing a school. Common patterns include ไปโรงเรียน (“go to school”) and อยู่ที่โรงเรียน (“be at school”). It is neutral enough for both everyday conversation and official contexts.

Caution

เรียน by itself is a verb meaning “study” or “learn”; it does not mean the place called a school. A university is normally called มหาวิทยาลัย, not โรงเรียน.
