In modern Thai, its most important use is as a noun for a membership-based association formed around a shared purpose. It frequently appears in the official names of organizations. The field or type of member commonly follows สมาคม, as in สมาคมกีฬา, “sports association,” and สมาคมศิษย์เก่า, “alumni association.” Common combinations include สมาชิกสมาคม, “association member,” ก่อตั้งสมาคม, “establish an association,” and นายกสมาคม, “association president.” Its verbal use sounds formal in everyday modern Thai and is most often encountered in the expression คบค้าสมาคม, meaning “to associate with people.” Associations may be counted with แห่ง, while repeated สมาคม can also function as a classifier.

Usage

It is common in the names of professional, academic, sports, charitable, and trade associations. It also appears frequently in news reports, official documents, membership information, and meeting announcements. The verbal use is mainly found in formal writing about social relationships.

Caution

สมาคม normally refers to an established organization with an ongoing purpose, not merely a temporary gathering. Use การประชุม for a meeting and กลุ่ม for an informal group. As a verb meaning “associate with,” it can sound stiff when used alone; คบหา is more natural in ordinary conversation.
