คนรวย is formed from คน, “person,” and รวย, “to be rich or wealthy,” so its literal sense is “a person who is rich.” Its form does not change for singular and plural. In เขาเป็นคนรวย, it refers to one wealthy person; in a general statement about คนรวย, it can mean “the rich” as a group. When counting individuals, คน is used as the classifier, as in คนรวยสองคน, “two rich people.” รวย describes someone’s financial condition, while คนรวย is a noun referring to a person with that condition.

Usage

It is widely used when discussing a person’s financial status, aspirations, spending, housing, taxes, or economic inequality. It is natural in both everyday conversation and news or social commentary. It also commonly appears in contrasts such as คนรวยกับคนจน, “the rich and the poor.”

Caution

To describe someone’s condition as “He is rich,” เขารวย is natural. Since คนรวย is a noun, “He is a rich person” is normally เขาเป็นคนรวย, with เป็น. Calling someone คนรวย directly can also sound intrusive because it openly judges their income or assets.
