งานอดิเรก is the standard Thai noun for a hobby, such as reading, cooking, photography, or playing a sport for enjoyment. It consists historically of งาน, meaning “work” or “activity,” and อดิเรก, referring to something additional or secondary. In modern Thai, it is best learned as a single expression. Common patterns include งานอดิเรกของฉัน (“my hobby”), มีงานอดิเรก (“to have a hobby”), and ทำ…เป็นงานอดิเรก (“to do … as a hobby”). Different kinds of hobbies are often counted with อย่าง, as in งานอดิเรกหลายอย่าง (“several hobbies”).
Usage
It is commonly used when asking about hobbies in introductions, discussing how someone spends their free time, or completing profiles and questionnaires. It also indicates that an activity is done for personal enjoyment rather than professionally.
Caution
งานอดิเรก does not mean “free time”; that is เวลาว่าง. It should also be distinguished from a side job done for income, usually called งานเสริม or อาชีพเสริม.
