Explanation
ผุพัง combines ผุ, “to decay or rot,” with พัง, “to break down or collapse.” It therefore suggests more than simply being old: the object has gradually weakened through age, neglect, moisture, insects, or similar causes and may be close to falling apart. It can function as a predicate, as in บ้านผุพัง (“the house is dilapidated”), or modify a noun with ที่, as in อาคารที่ผุพัง (“a dilapidated building”). It may also be used figuratively for a system or society that has been weakened from within by long-standing problems.
Usage
It is commonly used for old houses, abandoned buildings, wooden doors, furniture, and other objects that have decayed enough to require repair or removal. It also appears in news reports about unsafe, deteriorating buildings.
Caution
For something suddenly broken in an accident or a machine that has stopped working, พัง is usually more natural. Spoiled or rotten food is described with เน่า, not ผุพัง.
